    the state of commercials
    has anyone else noticed, that lately commercials seem almost disturbing? in the attempt to tap into the generation x or y or z or whatever letter we are on these days, we are foregoing GOOD advertising with bizarre urban ledgends of what people think is "cool". what's the first rule of "cool" anyway? once your parents or the media starts calling things "cool", they lose the "cool" appeal.

    i have been long disturbed by the skittles commercial where the man has a long beard and it's feeding him skittles and feeding the interviewer skittles. i am all for creative thinking and abstract thought. however, i honestly fail to see how that sells skittles to me. it almost repulses me.

    in addition, the new beef jerky that's trying to compete with slim jim. their ads running now are "messing with sasquatch". yes, kind of humorous. however, AGAIN i fail to see how this helps their brand. i cannot remember what the brand of jerky is but i remember the commercial. doesn't that sound like a problem? also, it seems as if they are copying slim jim's market. i would think that what it would be intended for, camping, wilderness, etc would have a substantial following? why not more appropriately advertise to them.

    most commercials on television, as of late, are almost seizure causing. they throw their product in front of the camera, whip it around, add a popular song and some stretched pop culture reference and call it a day. however, i'm left not remembering what it is i'm supposed to buy because i'm trying to figure out the commercial. i like tv ... let me rephrase that i LOVE tv. i like things being wrapped up in a half hour... i like just letting my mind not think... and commercials seem to be progressively getting more and more abstract. why can't we go back to GOOD advertising: product - theme that PERTAINS to the product!

    i think coke has good ads out right now. they are selling a lifestyle. but it's DEFINTELY about coke. i'm not confused. the commercials show the product in a comfortable manner. they are fun; they are cute; they are pleasant. that's what i want my tv to be.

    ++++
